Intellectual Property Litigation: Federal Statistics Roundup

I’ll admit, I just discovered the statistics page at the U.S. Courts Administration site. While perusing the 2010 statistics for federal cases, I came across the top states and circuits for IP Litigation. Enjoy!

Total Trademark, Copyright and Patent cases filed (federally) from 1/1/2010 – 12/31/2010: 9,278

States with highest number of cases:

California: 1,920
Texas: 1,147
New York: 865

Circuits with highest case load:

9th Circuit: 2,624
5th Circuit: 1,217
2nd Circuit: 906

As for dear Puerto Rico, we only had 24 IP cases filed at the Federal District Court.

So there you have it. California dreaming, Lone Star riding or Broadway playing is where it’s at for IP litigation (at the federal level).
